Where it comes from
A Kashan, from the historic weaving city of central Iran, 239 x 168 cm (7'10" x 5'6"). Kashan has been producing rugs since the Safavid era, prized for balanced medallion layouts and a deep crimson ground that has become its signature. This piece takes the city's classic design and sets it in cream instead.
What you see
The eye meets a warm ivory field before anything else, and only then the pattern within it: a fine diamond lattice of floral vines, rendered in navy, brick red, sage and camel rather than shouted in the usual dark palette. Where the diagonals cross at the centre sits a small rosette medallion, easy to overlook among the repeat, which is exactly the point of a lattice design — the pattern is meant to carry the eye across the whole field rather than fix it on one spot. A wide multi-band border in tan and camel, with a navy guard stripe close in, frames the field firmly without pressing in on it.
How it was made
The wool is hand-spun, not machine-spun, and it is this that gives the pile its slight irregularity of texture and its soft, slightly muted sheen — machine-spun wool takes dye more evenly and looks flatter. A cotton warp keeps the rug stable and true, letting the weaver work the fine lattice and its floral sprays with the crisp outlines you see rather than a blurred repeat. Every knot here is tied by hand, and it is the combination of a closely worked lattice and a short, evenly sheared pile that gives the surface its clean, finished look rather than a heavy, textured one.

A rug this size sits well in a bedroom or under a small seating group, and its pale ground makes it a natural choice for a room with light floors, where it will read as warmth rather than pattern from across the room. Underfoot the pile is short, even and firm, comfortable to a bare foot and settled enough for daily use rather than a room kept for best. Against darker furniture the cream ground holds its own quietly, and as the light in the room shifts through the day, the sage and camel in the lattice come forward and recede in turn, so the rug never looks quite the same twice.
