About This Kashan
Where it comes from
This is a Kashan, from one of Persia's most celebrated weaving cities, also written Kāshān, measuring 208 x 133 cm (6'10" x 4'4"). Kashan work is prized above all for its balanced medallion layouts and lyrical floral drawing, and traditionally for a deep crimson ground that has become the city's signature. Here that signature is set aside: the field is a deep midnight blue, carrying terracotta medallions rather than the crimson usually associated with the type.
What you see
The overall impression is of a dark, quiet ground broken by warmth. Two large lobed medallions in terracotta and salmon pink sit within the field, joined by a dense lattice of dark vine work that keeps the eye moving between them rather than settling on a single centre. Ivory and cream florals thread through the lattice, with mustard-gold, sage green and small touches of dusty blue picked out across the field. A wide, multi-band floral border closes the design around it, drawing on the same palette and holding the whole composition firmly in place.
How it was made
The rug is hand-knotted on a silk warp, with a pile of wool blended with silk. Silk spins far thinner than wool, so blending it into the pile let the weaver tie a finer knot than wool alone would allow. At 800,000 to 1,000,000 knots per square metre, the density is exceptionally fine, and it shows in the crisp edge of every medallion and every leaf along the border. The pile is cropped close at 12 millimetres, which keeps the drawing sharp rather than soft, and lets the pattern read clearly even from across a room.
At home
At 208 x 133 cm, this piece suits a bedroom, laid where it will be seen first and last each day, or a quiet corner of a living room beneath a pair of chairs. The midnight-blue ground holds its own against dark wood or dark upholstery, while the terracotta and mustard tones lift a paler floor without pulling too much light out of the room. Underfoot the wool and silk pile is dense and firm rather than deep and soft, made for daily use rather than a room kept for best. Move a lamp across it in the evening and the light silk sheen catches along the vine lattice, so the pattern seems to shift very slightly as you cross the floor.
