About This Lori-Pars

Where it comes from

This is a Lori-Pars, also known as Luri, a Gabbeh-style rug knotted by nomadic weavers of the Zagros mountains in Iran, measuring 195 x 148 cm (6'5" x 4'10"). The type is known for bold, simplified motifs and a thick, glossy handspun wool pile — yet this particular piece takes that boldness and turns it right down.

What you see

The field opens in a warm sand beige, close to camel, and settles into a rhythm of vertical stripes — plain camel bands alternating with taupe ones, textured by the twist of handspun yarn. Down several stripes runs a loose column of open diamonds, drawn only as outlines, spaced unevenly rather than set to a grid. A narrow border, barely darker than the field, closes the rug without competing, so the eye stays on the stripes rather than moving to an edge.

How it was made

Lori weavers hand-knot from memory on a portable loom, using wool they have spun by hand themselves. That handspun yarn varies slightly in thickness, and it is this that gives the striped bands their gentle ribbing and quiet tone shift, rather than any dye applied afterwards. At 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre and an 11 mm pile, the weave holds a crisp diamond outline yet stays loose enough to let each one drift from the last — the mark of memory, not a plan.

At home

This size suits a seating area or a bedroom, somewhere it will be seen up close rather than crossed at speed. The sand and taupe stripes warm a pale floor and sit quietly against darker wood. Underfoot the pile is soft and full, forgiving rather than firm. Morning light catches the twist in the wool, and the diamonds seem to shift position through the day.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 195 × 148 cm (2.89 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre; across 2.89 m² that is roughly 580,000 to 720,000 individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
