About This Lori-Pars

Where it comes from

This is a Lori-Pars, a tribal weaving from the Zagros mountains of southern Iran, 291 x 196 cm (9'6" x 6'5"). Lori rugs are usually known for bold, confident geometric motifs knotted from memory, but this piece carries none of that. There is no pattern here at all, only colour and the texture of the wool itself.

What you see

A warm sandy beige fills the field from edge to edge, running through with darker taupe and greyish-brown strands and the occasional lift of cream. Seen up close, these are not a drawn design but vertical striations, the kind of variation that appears when hand-spun yarn is dyed and knotted without a plan for symmetry. The effect reads like woodgrain, a natural abrash moving quietly across the surface. There is no border to frame it and no medallion at the centre; the field simply runs to a narrow flat selvedge in the same tone.

How it was made

The wool was hand-spun before it was dyed, and hand-spinning never produces a perfectly even thread — small variations in thickness and dye-uptake that, knot by knot, become the striations across the field. At 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre, the density is solid and workmanlike rather than fine, giving a pile with body rather than delicacy. The pile sits low, at 11 millimetres, close to the wool it was cut from, and that low, flat surface is what lets the striping read so clearly.

At home

A rug this quiet suits a living room, under a sofa group or anchoring a seating area, where the sandy tone warms a pale floor and holds its own against dark wood. Underfoot it is dense and firm, made to be walked on rather than protected. As daylight moves across it, the striations shift faintly in tone, the way grain does in timber — a plain rug with something to watch after all.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 291 × 196 cm (5.70 m²) this is a large rug. It sits under a seating group with the front legs of sofa and chairs on it, or under a dining table for four. A table for six wants about 80 cm of clearance all round, and needs more.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre; across 5.70 m² that is roughly 1.1 to 1.4 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
