About This Belutsch
Where it comes from
A Baluch, also written Belouch, in a compact 170 x 95 cm (5'7" x 3'1"). These are tribal weavings from the border country of southeastern Iran, knotted from memory rather than a drawn plan, and known for bold geometric pattern and a deep, earthy palette built on reds and indigo. This piece takes that same vocabulary and sets it on camel rather than red, a lighter ground than the type usually shows.
What you see
The field reads warm and golden at first glance, then resolves into a tight grid of hooked, stepped diamond medallions repeating in rust-red and navy across the camel wool. There is no single centrepiece; the pattern simply continues, edge to edge, in the all-over manner typical of the weaving. A wide brick-red border closes the field, carrying its own zigzag and hooked ornament, held in by narrow navy-and-ivory guard stripes that draw a firm line against the lighter ground. Here and there near the outer edges a small rosette sits just off the grid, a quiet break in an otherwise strict repeat.
How it was made
The wool was spun by hand before it was knotted, which is what gives the surface its dry, matte character rather than any sheen, and its faint unevenness of tone across the field. Knotted at somewhere between 128,000 and 160,000 knots per square metre on a cotton warp, it sits at a density suited to bold, blocky geometry rather than fine curves, which is exactly the drawing this piece carries. Twenty to forty years of settling have given the 6 mm wool pile a slightly softened, lived-in hand without dulling the contrast between camel and red.
At home
At this size the rug suits a bedroom, laid beside or at the foot of the bed rather than under a full suite of furniture, and the camel ground answers pale floorboards or light oak with real warmth. Against darker furniture the rust-red and navy hold their own rather than fading into the background. The pile is dense enough underfoot to take daily use without complaint, short and firm rather than plush, and it wears the way a hand-spun tribal wool should. Morning light crossing the grid catches the hooked edges of each diamond in turn, and it is a pattern that keeps offering something new to notice.
