About This Turkaman
Where it comes from
This is a Turkoman rug, also written Turkmen, a tribal weaving carried into Iran by nomadic clans whose Göl medallions still mark it as theirs, 182 x 136 cm (6'0" x 4'5"). Turkoman weavings are known above all for a deep red ground carrying the clan's Göl in tight, repeating rows. Here the ground is not red at all, but a deep navy blue.
What you see
The first impression is a dense grid of small elongated diamonds in red and cream against that navy field, giving a crisp, graphic tension in place of the soft glow a red ground usually gives. Narrow cream bands cross the field at intervals, dividing it into three horizontal sections. Framing it all is an unusually wide, many-striped border in camel, cream and red, patterned with small zigzags and diamonds, pale enough against the dark field that the rug reads almost as a frame within a frame.
How it was made
This rug was knotted on a silk warp, unusual in tribal work where wool foundations are usual. Silk spins thinner than wool, letting the weaver tie a tighter, more precise knot, which is why the diamond lattice holds such crisp edges. At 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre, tied by hand from memory rather than a drawn plan, this density meant months of steady work on a portable loom. The hand-spun wool pile, now forty to sixty years old, has settled into a firm, slightly ribbed surface.

This is a rug for a bedroom or a quiet reading corner. The navy ground holds its own against dark furniture and pale floors alike, while the red and cream lattice keeps the room from feeling heavy. Underfoot the wool is firm and slightly ribbed, built for daily use rather than careful stepping-around. Morning light catches the cream bands first, and the grid seems to shift gently through the day.
