About This Turkaman

Where it comes from

This is a Turkmen tribal rug, 225 x 157 cm (7'5" x 5'2"), woven by Turkmen weavers in Iran within the wider Central Asian tradition. These weavers are known for the gul medallion, a repeating tribal emblem, and for a density of knotting that makes their rugs among the most durable hand-made pieces. The ground is traditionally deep red; here it is a pale ivory instead.

What you see

The first impression is of a cream field densely covered in rows of angular medallions, brick red and rust orange, stacked in tight ranks across the rug. These octagonal guls alternate with small cross-shaped florets, filling the ground edge to edge with no central medallion. Dark navy outlines sharpen each gul against the pale field. A wide border in dark red and navy, patterned with fine zigzag and diamond stripes, takes up roughly a fifth of the rug's width.

How it was made

This Turkoman rug is hand-knotted on a wool warp, the pile of hand-spun wool, at a density of 501,000 to 640,000 knots per square metre — a tightness that took months at a portable loom to achieve. That fineness lets the gul outlines stay crisp against the pale ground; a coarser knot would blur where dark motif meets cream field. The pile is kept low, at 6 mm, giving the flat, crisp surface typical of a densely knotted tribal weave.

At home

This rug suits a bedroom or a seating area. The ivory ground lifts a room with pale flooring and holds its own against darker pieces, the brick red and rust guls warming the space without darkening it. Underfoot the pile is dense, low and firm, made for daily use. As the light moves across it, the gul rows catch and lose their edge in turn.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 225 × 157 cm (3.53 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 501,000 to 640,000 knots per square metre; across 3.53 m² that is roughly 1.8 to 2.3 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
