About This Patchwork
Where it comes from
This is a patchwork rug, 242 x 172 cm (7'11" x 5'8"), assembled in Iran from reclaimed fragments of antique and vintage Persian carpets. The type is a recent invention of the trade: rugs too worn or damaged to restore are cut into geometric sections and stitched back together into an entirely new field, so that no two patchwork rugs are ever quite alike.
What you see
The colour reads as one family of red, shifting patch by patch from deep crimson to faded old rose. There is no medallion, no repeating motif: the field is a grid of rectangles, each one a fragment of an older rug, divided by narrow brown seam lines throughout. The border is simply the outer row of the same patches, held by the same seam binding used elsewhere. In a few rectangles a faint dark trace seems to survive beneath the dye, the last mark of an older pattern.
How it was made
Every fragment began as a hand-knotted Persian rug, hand-spun wool on a cotton warp, knotted at a density built for daily use, not display. When the source rugs grew too worn to restore, artisans cut the sound sections into rectangles and hand-sewed them into this new field — so the wool carries decades of wear even though the piece was assembled within the last twenty years. The pile stays low, at 5 mm, and each rectangle keeps its own weave, its own slightly different hand.
At home
This size suits a living room, laid under a coffee table or in front of a sofa, anchoring a seating group. Against pale flooring the reds warm the room; against dark furniture they hold their own. Underfoot the wool is low and dense, made for daily use rather than careful preservation. Daylight catches the rectangles differently, so the same red keeps shifting mood as the sun moves.
Patchwork rugs are artistic compositions created by combining carefully selected sections of vintage Persian rugs into a unified new design. Each piece is a dialogue between tradition and contemporary aesthetics.
The individual fragments are often overdyed or color-harmonized to create a cohesive palette, while retaining the texture and craftsmanship of the original handmade pieces.

Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
