About This Belutsch

Where it comes from

This is a Baluch, also written Belouch, a tribal rug from the borderlands of southeastern Iran, 193 x 104 cm (6'4" x 3'5"). The type is known for bold, angular geometry and a deep, earthy palette of red and indigo, knotted from memory rather than from a drawn plan. This piece is unusually calm and exact for that tradition.

What you see

The field is a deep blackish-brown, almost black, filled edge to edge with a tight lattice of red star-shaped rosettes, evenly spaced with no medallion to break the rhythm. Around it runs a wide, layered border of red and black hook motifs on a dark ground, and just inside that a narrow ivory zigzag stripe separates field from border like a passe-partout. The surface is matte throughout, the flat hand-spun texture giving no directional sheen.

How it was made

This rug is hand-knotted on a cotton warp, the pile hand-spun wool, worked at a density of 128,000 to 160,000 knots per square metre. That is a fine count for a piece made on a portable loom, from memory, without a drawn plan — it is what let the weaver carry the same rosette evenly across the whole field. The pile stands 6 mm deep, firm enough to hold the pattern crisp underfoot, and at 20 to 40 years old it has proved it wears well.

At home

This is a rug for a smaller room or a defined corner — a study, a bedside spot in a bedroom, or a hallway short on daylight. The near-black ground and deep red hold their own in a dark room, warming pale floorboards rather than fading against them. Underfoot it is dense and firm, built for daily footsteps, and through the day the ivory zigzag stays crisp while the red rosettes seem to shift with the light.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 193 × 104 cm (2.01 m²) this is a small rug. It works beside a bed, in a reading corner, in front of a fireplace or as a mat by a door. It does not furnish a room; it makes a point in one.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 128,000 to 160,000 knots per square metre; across 2.01 m² that is roughly 260,000 to 320,000 individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
