About This Patchwork

Where it comes from

This is a patchwork rug, 240 x 171 cm (7'10" x 5'7"), a modern craft built from the salvaged remains of older Persian carpets too worn to survive as whole pieces. Skilled hands cut the sound sections into squares and rectangles and stitch them into a single new field, so the finished rug carries several old weaving traditions at once.

What you see

The first impression is warmth: a shifting field of sandy beige and caramel brown, panel by panel, each rectangle slightly different from its neighbour. Closer in, the panels separate into their own histories - one holds a faint floral trace, another the ghost of a diamond lattice, a third the corner of a border from some other rug entirely. No single pattern runs through the field and no medallion holds the centre; only fragments set side by side. A narrow strip of dark reddish-brown overlock frames the outer edge, holding the whole composition together.

How it was made

Each panel began as part of an antique Persian carpet, its surface worn down by years of use before it reached this workshop. Rather than discard what survived, the makers cut around the sound sections, matched them by colour and condition, and sewed them together by hand into squares and rectangles. That process explains the flat, matte surface: what remains is the foundation the old pattern once sat on, thin in places, faded in others, the seams between panels left visible as part of the construction rather than hidden.

At home

A rug this size settles into a bedroom, laid at the foot of the bed, or into a quieter corner of a living room. The camel and caramel tones warm a pale floor without shouting, and the scattered teal outlines give the eye small points to rest on. Underfoot it is flat, thin and firm, already worn in and asking only to be walked on. Morning light crossing the panels picks out each fragment in turn, so the rug keeps offering small histories to notice.

Patchwork rugs are artistic compositions created by combining carefully selected sections of vintage Persian rugs into a unified new design. Each piece is a dialogue between tradition and contemporary aesthetics.

The individual fragments are often overdyed or color-harmonized to create a cohesive palette, while retaining the texture and craftsmanship of the original handmade pieces.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 240 × 171 cm (4.10 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
