About This Lori-Pars

Where it comes from

This is a Lori-Pars rug, also written Luri, a nomadic weaving from the Zagros mountains of Iran, measuring 192 x 151 cm (6'4" x 5'0"). Lori work is usually prized for confident colour and bold, self-taught geometry, knotted from memory rather than a drawn plan. This piece takes a quieter path than that reputation suggests.

What you see

The field is a warm sandgold, close to gold-beige, and it holds the eye before any pattern does. Fine rust-brown lines cross it to form a grid of rectangular panels, laid out with no medallion and no centre to rest on. Look closer and each panel carries a faint dotted diamond texture, barely raised above the ground. A narrow beige border runs around the edge, so pale it hardly separates the field from the room beyond it.

How it was made

Hand-knotted from wool that was spun by hand before it was dyed, this rug carries a slight sheen and a soft clouding of tone across the panels rather than one flat colour. Working from memory rather than a drawn cartoon, the weaver still held this grid regular across the full width of the loom, panel after panel. At 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre, the density keeps the brown lines crisp without hardening the pile, which stands soft and full at 11 mm.

At home

At just under two metres by one and a half, this rug suits a seating area in a living room or the floor beside a bed. The sandgold field warms a pale floor and holds its own against darker furniture. Underfoot it is soft and cushioned, suited to a room for sitting and resting rather than heavy daily traffic. As daylight moves across it, the handspun wool catches a faint sheen, and the quiet grid never sits quite as still as it first appears.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 192 × 151 cm (2.90 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre; across 2.90 m² that is roughly 580,000 to 720,000 individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
