About This Lori-Pars
Where it comes from
This is a Lori-Pars, a nomadic weaving from the Zagros mountains of Iran, measuring 190 x 157 cm (6'2" x 5'2"). Rugs of this kind are knotted from memory rather than from a drawn plan, and they are known above all for bold, simplified motifs in thick, hand-spun wool. What sets this particular piece apart is that it carries no motif at all.
What you see
The field reads as a warm caramel-brown, softened by sandy beige, with two bands of deeper chocolate crossing near the top and finer streaks of taupe scattered through the rest. Look closely and faint threads of lilac-grey turn up within the striping, cool notes against all that warmth. There is no medallion and no border; the colour simply runs in loose horizontal bands and fades, at the very edges, into undyed-looking wool. Toward the lower centre the tone lifts into a softer, paler passage that reads almost like a rise of light breaking the stripes, though it is the colour doing the work rather than any drawn shape.
How it was made
Hand-spun wool never comes off the spindle perfectly even, and it takes the mountain plant dyes unevenly too, which is exactly why the field moves in bands rather than sitting flat. No cartoon guided this weaver; the gradient is her own sense of colour, laid down in memory rather than copied from a pattern. At 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre and a 12 mm pile, the weave is close enough to hold its colour cleanly but still generous enough underfoot to feel like a proper Gabbeh rather than a thin, tight weave. Being newly made, the wool is at its fullest and the surface still has all its original loft.
At home
At this size the rug suits a bedroom floor or a quieter corner of a living room, somewhere it can be seen whole rather than disappearing under a large table. Against pale flooring the caramel and chocolate tones bring real warmth; against darker furniture the lilac threads keep it from turning flat. Underfoot it is soft and deep rather than firm, better suited to a calm room than to heavy daily traffic. Watch it through the day and the striping shifts with the light, the paler band near the bottom catching the last of it before dusk.
