Where it comes from
This is a Baluch, a tribal and nomadic weaving from the borderlands of southeastern Iran, measuring 215 x 112 cm (7'1" x 3'8"). The type is best known for deep reds and indigo blue, and for prayer-niche mihrab layouts carried down through generations of weavers. This piece takes a different course: a disciplined all-over lattice rather than the tribe's familiar prayer form.
What you see
The ground is a deep navy, dense enough from across a room to read almost as a printed textile rather than a knotted one. Closer, it resolves into row upon row of small octagons in brick red and rust, each one a variation on the classic Turkoman gul. Faint ivory dots mark the centres, catching the eye against all that navy. A wide red border frames the field, filled with dark angular guard stripes and a running meander, holding the pattern in rather than competing with it.
How it was made
The wool is hand-spun, drawn out by hand rather than machine, so its thickness varies slightly along the thread. Hand-knotted at 128,000 to 160,000 knots per square metre onto a cotton warp, that variation surfaces in the field as a faint shift where the octagon rows step across the width, the kind of thing that happens when a weaver works from memory rather than a fixed cartoon. The pile stands 6mm deep, cropped low enough to keep the geometry sharp, and twenty to forty years have settled it into the slightly ribbed, matte surface typical of the type.
At home
At this size the rug suits a hallway, a landing, or the floor beside a bed, somewhere it is seen up close rather than across a room. The navy holds its own against dark floorboards or furniture, while the red and rust warm a paler room considerably. Underfoot it is dense and firm, built for a well-used passage rather than a quiet corner. Morning light finds the ivory dots first, then the deeper reds as the day goes on, and the lattice keeps its order however long you look at it.
