About This Belutsch

Where it comes from

This is a Baluch, also written Baluchi — a tribal weaving from the borderlands of south-eastern Iran, hand-knotted rather than woven flat, 210 x 105 cm (6'11" x 3'5"). The type is known for deep, earthy reds and indigo, and for compositions built around a mihrab or medallion knotted from memory rather than to a fixed plan.

What you see

The ground here is an unusually deep chocolate-black, crossed by a vertical chain of large hexagonal medallions in red and ivory, with small cream floral sprigs and angular hook motifs scattered across the field. A broad brick-red border encloses the whole, filled with repeating hook and stepped-diamond devices in cream, orange and dark brown; inside it, a narrower guard stripe carries a crisp double-hook cartouche in orange and cream, sharper in colour than anything else in the piece.

How it was made

The wool was spun by hand before it was knotted, and that hand-spinning is uneven by nature, giving the surface its matte, slightly nubby feel and its complete absence of sheen. At a density of 128,000 to 160,000 knots per square metre, knotted over a cotton warp, the weaver still resolved the medallions' hard edges clearly on a portable loom, without a cartoon to work from. A pile kept low, at six millimetres, keeps that drawing sharp underfoot rather than soft.

At home

A rug this narrow suits a hallway, a landing, or the floor beside a bed. The near-black ground works well where daylight is scarce, and the red and ivory of the medallions lift the darkness rather than vanish into it. Underfoot the wool is dense and firm, made for a floor that is walked on, not admired from a doorway. Catch it under a lamp and the medallions step forward, as though the chain itself were moving.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 210 × 105 cm (2.21 m²) this is a small rug. It works beside a bed, in a reading corner, in front of a fireplace or as a mat by a door. It does not furnish a room; it makes a point in one.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 128,000 to 160,000 knots per square metre; across 2.21 m² that is roughly 280,000 to 350,000 individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
