About This Turkaman

Where it comes from

This is a Turkmen prayer rug, a mehrabi, from the nomadic weaving tradition of Central Asia — also known as Turkoman work — measuring 131 x 101 cm (4'4" x 3'4"), known for its repeating gul medallions and deep red ground. Here that usual rhythm is broken: the prayer niche sits off to one side rather than centred.

What you see

The ground is a deep brick red, warmed by ivory and rust accents. The niche is stepped, its outline climbing in small terraces to a point leaning right rather than centred, so the field reads as an arrow rather than an arch. Diamond lattice fills the niche, flanked by rows of angular ivory-and-brown guls. Multiple narrow borders, in red, ivory and navy, band the field with diamonds and hooks into a frame wide for so small a rug.

How it was made

This is a hand-knotted piece, the wool pile handspun and set on a cotton warp, with a knot count of 441,000 to 500,000 per square metre — dense enough to draw the stepped niche and the small guls with real precision. Turkmen rugs like this were knotted from memory on a portable loom, without a drawn plan, which is exactly why the niche could be shifted off-centre: a workshop cartoon would have kept it symmetrical, a weaver working from memory did not need to.

At home

A rug this size suits a hallway, a study, or a space beside a bed rather than an open living room. Its brick red holds its own against dark furniture and warms a pale floor. The pile is dense and flat underfoot, sturdy enough for daily use rather than a room kept for best. There the offset niche does its work, pointing rather than resting at centre, drawing the eye down the hall long after the first look.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 131 × 101 cm (1.32 m²) this is a small rug. It works beside a bed, in a reading corner, in front of a fireplace or as a mat by a door. It does not furnish a room; it makes a point in one.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre; across 1.32 m² that is roughly 580,000 to 660,000 individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
