About This Kordi
Where it comes from
A Kordi rug, hand-knotted by Kurdish weavers in the west of Iran, 299 x 150 cm (9'10" x 4'11"). Kurdish weaving is known for its density and weight underfoot, and for a range that runs from bold geometry to soft floral drawing, depending on the region it comes from. This piece takes the bolder path, and takes it further than most.
What you see
The field opens in a deep brick red, packed edge to edge with small floral and vine motifs in cream, mustard and salmon. Rising through the centre is a single stepped medallion, far larger than anything else in the field, its outline sharp and angular in navy with touches of dusty rose, flanked by pendant anchors above and below. Where most Kordi pieces scatter several small medallions across a runner, here one shape has taken over the whole width of the field. A wide navy border, filled with the same small red and cream sprigs and closed in by narrow blue and red guard stripes, holds the composition firmly in place.
How it was made
The rug is tied in the symmetric knot on a wool foundation, at 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre, a density that favours confident, larger forms over fine detail. That is exactly what shows here: rather than working the medallion down into a cluster of small motifs, the weaver let it stand large and graphic against the busy field, a decision the coarser hand-spun wool pile suits well. That same wool, sheared to 12 mm, sits with a matte, slightly uneven surface and visible depth at the edges, the mark of a piece 40 to 60 years old that was always meant for use rather than for looking at.
At home
At 150 cm wide, this is a rug for a bedroom, laid beside or at the foot of the bed, where the brick red will warm a pale floor and hold its own against dark wood furniture without demanding the room. The dense wool pile is soft underfoot yet firm, built for daily footsteps rather than careful ones. As morning light crosses it, the abrash in the red field shifts gently and the navy medallion keeps its shape, the one thing in the room the eye returns to.
