About This Abadeh
Where it comes from
This is an Abadeh, a village weaving from the Fars province of Persia, worked by settled weavers close to Qashqai tribal tradition, also written Abade. The runner measures 196 x 77 cm (6'5" x 2'6"). Abadeh rugs are usually known for a bold medallion set against dense, tribal-inflected geometry, hand-knotted and drawn with the freehand spontaneity of a village loom rather than a workshop cartoon.
What you see
An ivory field runs the full length, covered edge to edge with a fine lattice of small diamond motifs in pink, blue, brown and dusty rose, each outlined in navy-black. At the centre sits a single small octagonal medallion, quiet rather than commanding, before the eye moves back out across the repeat. A broad, deep brick-red border closes the field, its dark navy guard stripe scattered with small floral rosettes, giving the runner weight against the pale ground.
How it was made
The pile is hand-spun wool, knotted onto a cotton warp, at a density of 251,000 to 320,000 knots per square metre. Hand-spun wool takes a finer, less even thread than machine-spun yarn, and it is this that let the weaver draw the lattice at such a small scale, each diamond little larger than a fingernail, without the pattern blurring into the ground. Clipped to 8 millimetres, the pile stays low enough to keep that fine drawing crisp underfoot, and matte enough that no sheen competes with the colour.
At home
At under 80 centimetres wide, this is a runner for a hallway or a landing, seen in passing rather than sat on. Its ivory field lifts a corridor with no daylight of its own, while the brick-red border keeps it grounded against dark floorboards. Underfoot it is dense and firm, wool on cotton built for daily footsteps rather than careful protection. Passing light catches the navy outlines first, then the paler motifs behind them, so the lattice seems to shift very slightly as you walk its length.
Abadeh rugs come from the oasis city of Abadeh in Fars Province, central Iran, on the northern edge of the Qashqai tribal territory. Woven on cotton foundations with hand-spun wool, they show a strong Qashqai influence, bold diamond medallions, tribal motifs, and confident colour contrasts in characteristic brick-red tones.
Three main design types define Abadeh production: Zil-i-Sultan (vase and bouquet motifs), Keibathlou (Qashqai-style diamond medallions), and Moharamati (stripe patterns). The handmade spontaneity and direct colour language keep each piece from feeling too formal.
