Where it comes from
The runner in front of you is a Baluch, also written Belouch, hand-knotted in the borderlands of southeastern Iran, measuring 187 x 91 cm (6'2" x 3'0"). Baluch weavers are known for bold, angular geometry and for prayer-rug layouts built around a single mihrab arch. This piece takes a different path through that same tradition: rather than one niche, it sets a column of medallions marching down the length of the runner.
What you see
The field is so dark it reads almost as black, a blue-brown depth that holds the pattern close to the surface. Down its centre stand four octagonal medallions, each built around a diamond, spaced evenly like stations along the runner's length. Around them the ground is filled edge to edge with small geometric motifs, none of them idle. The border pulls the eye outward: a wide zig-zag in brick red and rust against the dark ground, taking up close to a fifth of the width, sharp where the field is quiet.
How it was made
Everything here was knotted from memory, on a portable loom, without a drawn plan to follow — which is why the four medallions keep their family likeness without ever repeating exactly. The wool is hand-spun, and its slightly uneven thickness is what gives the surface its visible ribbing rather than a flat, machine-even face. At a density of 128,000 to 160,000 knots per square metre, this sits at the density nomadic looms typically produce, sturdy rather than fine, and the 6 mm pile has already had twenty to forty years to settle into a firm, matte hand.
At home
This is a hallway or landing runner, made for a floor people actually cross rather than one they admire from a doorway. The near-black field takes footmarks and daylight changes without showing them, while the red zig-zag border keeps the eye moving along its length. Underfoot it is dense and firm, built for regular traffic rather than a room that sees light use. Walk its length in low afternoon light and the rust and cream accents catch first, and you find yourself counting the four medallions as you pass, the same rhythm the weaver worked into it by hand.
