About This Esfarayen

Where it comes from

This is a village rug from Esfarayen, also written Esfarāyen, in North Khorasan, home to Kurdish weavers better known for their flatweaves, though their knotted rugs share the same hardwearing handspun wool and plain geometric drawing. It measures 294 x 205 cm (9'8" x 6'9"). Rather than gathering around a single field, this piece is built in bands, closer to a woven sample than the usual Persian layout.

What you see

The field reads as a sequence of horizontal bands, navy, brick red and ochre in turn, each filled with its own small floral sprays and rosettes rather than one continuous ground. The effect is striped before it is floral, the eye moving along the rug rather than settling in its centre. A wide ivory border holds it together, filled with large red and blue-grey palmettes linked by scrolling leaves, closed by a slim navy guard stripe and a plain terracotta edge.

How it was made

The wool is handspun, which keeps a slight irregularity in the yarn and gives the surface its faint sheen and fine, ribbed texture. Knotted at 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre on a cotton warp, with a 12 millimetre pile, it is dense enough to hold the banding crisp without losing the wool's softness. The layout was never drawn from a workshop cartoon; it is the weaver's own arrangement, set out freehand from memory, which is why the rhythm feels personal rather than repeated.

At home

At this size, the rug suits a living or dining room, comfortably under a table or in front of a sofa. Navy and gold hold their own against dark wood, while the brick red and ochre warm a paler floor. The short, dense pile is firm underfoot, made for daily use rather than careful protection. In afternoon light the bands catch differently, one after another, keeping the striped rhythm alive through the day.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 294 × 205 cm (6.03 m²) this is a large rug. It sits under a seating group with the front legs of sofa and chairs on it, or under a dining table for four. A table for six wants about 80 cm of clearance all round, and needs more.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre; across 6.03 m² that is roughly 1.9 to 2.3 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
