Ardabil rugs come from Ardabil Province in the far northwest of Iran, on the historic crossroads between Persia and the Caucasus. Woven on a cotton foundation with wool pile, they sit between tribal and city weaving, with a medium, even knotting and a palette that runs lighter than most northwest Persian rugs.
Designs favour clear geometry: diamond medallions, connected lozenges, and the Mahi (Herati) fish pattern, often framed by Caucasian-influenced borders. The fresh, graphic colours let Ardabil rugs sit comfortably in both traditional and modern interiors. The master weaver has signed this piece, a mark of exceptional quality and pride in their craft.
More on Ardabil rugs: origin, making and how to recognise a genuine piece
Measuring 326 × 201 cm, with an area of 6.55 m², crafted from Hand-spun Wool, Hand-knotted, this piece is a testament to masterful craftsmanship. The knot density of 321,000 – 380,000 / m² speaks to the extraordinary care woven into every inch.
Preserved in perfect condition, a crossroads weave with caucasian clarity and persian craft, fresh and versatile.
Superior craftsmanship
At 326 × 201 cm (6.55 m²) this is a large rug. It sits under a seating group with the front legs of sofa and chairs on it, or under a dining table for four. A table for six wants about 80 cm of clearance all round, and needs more.
Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre; across 6.55 m² that is roughly 2.1 to 2.5 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.
Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
