About This Lori-Kashkouli
Where it comes from
This is a Kashkuli, also written Keshkuli, a hand-knotted tribal weaving from the Qashqai confederacy of southern Iran, 199 x 158 cm (6'6" x 5'2"). The name belongs to one of the most respected Qashqai clans, and Kashkuli rugs are prized among tribal weavings for unusually fine knotting and a confident design sense, usually built around an elaborate medallion drawn in soft, curving lines. This piece earns the same reputation by a quieter route.
What you see
The first impression is warmth without incident: a soft, almost monochrome apricot-beige field, its faint striations catching what light there is, left otherwise bare. There is no medallion, no central device at all, only the wool itself. The eye moves outward to a stepped border, a shade or two darker in tan-brown, running to roughly a fifth of the rug's width. Along its inner edge, a single row of small rust-brown outline squares provides the only ornament the rug allows itself.
How it was made
Kashkuli weavers knot from memory rather than from a drawn plan, and here that memory has produced restraint rather than intricacy. The pile is hand-spun wool over a natural wool warp, holding a slight irregularity no cartoon-led workshop rug would show, knotted at 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre, a density well above what most tribal weaving attempts. That fineness is normally spent filling a medallion with detail; here it goes instead into keeping a plain field even and alive, so that a rug with almost nothing drawn on it still rewards a long look.
At home
At just under two metres by a metre and a half, it suits a bedroom or a quiet seating corner rather than a busy thoroughfare. The apricot tone warms a pale floor and holds its own against dark wood furniture without ever raising its voice. Underfoot the 12mm wool pile is soft and springy rather than flat, matte enough to sit calmly in any light. As the sun moves across the room, the hand-spun wool shifts through its own tones, so the plainest thing in the rug is never quite the same twice.
