About This Beghardeh

Where it comes from

A Beghardeh village rug from the weaving districts of western Iran, 128 x 137 cm (4'2" x 4'6"), a near-square format rather than the long rectangle this Heriz-style medallion design usually takes. Villages of this kind wove for their own homes and local trade rather than for export, favouring plain geometric or floral schemes and an honest, hard-wearing construction over refinement.

What you see

The first impression is a deep brick-red field almost filled by an ivory stepped diamond medallion, drawn so large that its points nearly reach the top and bottom of the field. A smaller red medallion sits inside it, and the corners carry cream spandrels filled with small floral and geometric motifs in pink, teal and dark brown. A wide navy-blue border, patterned with a serrated rosette-and-vine design, closes the composition, held in by a narrow camel-brown guard stripe.

How it was made

This is a hand-knotted village weaving, drawn freehand rather than from a fixed workshop cartoon, which is why the medallion could be set at a scale a stricter Heriz drawing would rarely allow. A cotton warp carries a hand-spun wool pile, knotted at 251,000 to 320,000 knots per square metre and left at a generous 10 mm, dense enough to hold the medallion's stepped outline crisp and angular rather than let it soften into a curve.

At home

At this size the rug suits a study, a reading corner, or the floor beside a bed, somewhere it is seen at close range rather than across a room. The brick red holds its own against dark wood and warms a pale floor, while the navy border keeps the square from feeling too loud. Underfoot the pile is dense and firm, made for daily footsteps rather than careful preservation, and as daylight moves across it the ivory medallion is what the eye keeps returning to.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 128 × 137 cm (1.75 m²) this is a small rug. It works beside a bed, in a reading corner, in front of a fireplace or as a mat by a door. It does not furnish a room; it makes a point in one.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 251,000 to 320,000 knots per square metre; across 1.75 m² that is roughly 440,000 to 560,000 individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
