About This Lori-Pars

Where it comes from

This is a Lori-Pars, also written Luri, a nomadic weaving from the Zagros mountains of southwest Iran, sized 247 x 165 cm (8'1" x 5'5"). Rugs of this family are usually known for bold, simplified motifs knotted from memory - here the weaver has gone a step further and left the field entirely free of pattern.

What you see

The first impression is a single warm tone: a sandy apricot running from corner to corner, with no medallion, no border, and nothing to interrupt it. Look along its length and the colour is not quite flat - fine vertical striations move through the field, tan strands rising and fading like light through smoke. A narrow beige-pink selvedge edges the rug, so close to the field colour that it barely reads as a border at all. Nothing here competes with the wool itself.

How it was made

That striping is abrash, the mark of wool spun by hand rather than machine: each skein leaves the spindle slightly different in thickness and tone, and a weaver working from memory over many weeks knots those small variations straight into the field. At 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre the weave holds a clean, even surface, and the low, 11 millimetre pile keeps the wool's natural sheen close to the ground. The result is a rug whose only decoration is the wool itself.

At home

At 247 x 165 cm this suits a bedroom, or a quiet corner of a living room away from the main traffic. Its apricot tone warms pale floorboards and holds its own against dark furniture without ever competing for attention. Underfoot the wool is dense and matte, firm rather than deep, made for daily bare feet rather than careful handling. Morning light crossing the room will catch the vertical striations first, then let them fade - and that quiet shift is the whole pleasure of the piece.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 247 × 165 cm (4.08 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre; across 4.08 m² that is roughly 0.8 to 1.0 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
