About This Khorasan
Where it comes from
This is a Khorasan, a large floral medallion rug from northeastern Iran, 344 x 242 cm (11'3" x 7'11"). Khorasan has produced carpets for two thousand years, and the region is known above all for scale: big, confident medallion compositions built on Herati-derived floral repeats, usually carried in a weighty balance of red and blue. This piece keeps the vocabulary but lightens the touch, with a single medallion set quietly into the field rather than the fuller, more layered medallion-and-corner arrangement the type is generally known for.
What you see
The ground is a warm ivory, and it is covered edge to edge in fine floral scrollwork before the eye finds the medallion at all. That medallion, small and multicoloured, sits almost modestly at the centre, with matching floral bursts echoing it at top and bottom. A wide navy border carries the same scrollwork in a darker key, and a narrow rust-red guard stripe runs alongside it, giving the pale field a firm, dark edge without weighing the whole rug down.
How it was made
The rug is hand-knotted, with a cotton warp and a pile of hand-spun wool, at a density of 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre. Hand-spinning leaves the wool thread slightly uneven along its length, which is what gives the surface its soft, faintly lustrous character rather than a flat, uniform sheen. At this density the weaver could still resolve the scrollwork and the small medallion cleanly, without needing silk to sharpen the line — the restraint in the design is matched by a restraint in the means used to achieve it.

At 344 x 242 cm this rug is built for a dining room or a living room seating group, somewhere it can be seen whole. The ivory ground lifts a room with darker furniture and lets the navy border do the grounding instead, while the rust guard stripe keeps a warm line running underneath. Underfoot, at 12 mm the pile is dense and firm rather than plush, well suited to daily use rather than careful protection. As daylight moves across it through the day, the slight lustre in the wool catches differently, and the small medallion keeps a quiet presence at the centre of it all.
