About This Khorasan
Where it comes from
This is a Khorasan rug, also written Khorassan, hand-knotted in the northeast of Iran, measuring 278 x 211 cm (9'1" x 6'11"). The region has woven carpets for over two millennia and is known for grand medallion compositions where bold red meets deep blue. This piece steps away from that: there is no medallion, and the ground opens into warm ivory rather than the customary red.
What you see
Warm ivory covers the field from edge to edge, carrying a dense scrolling vine that spreads without a centre, palmettes and serrated leaves turning over one another in rust-red, dusty rose, sage green, camel and powder blue. The pattern is continuous, the eye moving outward rather than settling on a middle point. A wide navy border closes the composition, its own floral scroll picking up the same palette and giving the open field something firm to rest against.
How it was made
The pile is hand-spun wool, knotted onto a cotton warp at 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre, a range that gives real definition to the scrolling vine without pushing toward extreme fineness. Hand-spun wool takes dye with slight unevenness from thread to thread, which is why the coloured motifs carry a soft sheen while the ivory ground stays matte around them. At 12 mm the pile holds that contrast clearly rather than flattening it into a single surface.

This rug suits a dining table or a seating group in a living room. The ivory ground lifts a room short on daylight and holds its own against dark wood. Underfoot the wool is dense and firm, made for daily use rather than display. As light moves across it, the sheen on the coloured motifs catches first, then settles into the calm of the ivory.
