About This Khorasan
Where it comes from
This is a Khorasan, hand-knotted in the northeast of Iran, 241 x 200 cm (7'11" x 6'7"). Khorasan carpets are traditionally large-format pieces, built up from dense medallions and Herati-derived patterns in a deep balance of red and blue, a design language two millennia in the making. This piece keeps that palette but sets aside the usual density, leaving far more of the field open than the type is known for.
What you see
The ground is a warm ivory, almost bare but for five floral bouquets set at intervals, each drawn in rust red, camel, dusty blue and olive against the cream. Beneath the middle spray sits a small stylised vase, a quiet centre from which the garden around it seems to grow. A broad navy-black border closes the composition, filled with dense floral vinework and edged by a narrower camel and red guard stripe, taking up close to a fifth of the width.
How it was made
The pile is hand-spun wool, knotted onto a cotton warp at 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre, a density that would normally carry a continuous pattern across the whole field. Here that same fine resolution was used to draw five isolated bouquets with real precision, and the weaver simply left the ivory ground around them untouched. It takes a confident hand to leave so much of a Khorasan empty rather than fill it, and the drawing has to be exact because nothing else competes with it for attention. At 12 millimetres the pile sits low and even, giving the surface a smooth, settled feel rather than a plush one.
At home
At 241 x 200 cm, this suits a living room seating area or a bedroom, somewhere it can be taken in whole rather than half-hidden under a large table. The ivory ground lifts a room with darker furniture or timber floors, while the navy border holds the composition together and keeps it from reading as too pale. Underfoot the wool is dense and even, firm enough for a room in daily use. As the light moves through the day, the rust and dusty blue in each bouquet catch it in turn, so the five sprays never quite look the same from one hour to the next.
