About This Khorasan
Where it comes from
This is a Khorasan rug, 243 x 192 cm (8'0" x 6'4"), from the northeastern Iranian region long known as the Land of the Rising Sun. Khorasan weaving is recognised for grand medallion florals with Herati detail, red balanced against blue. This piece sets both aside: no medallion, and a field of deep, near-black navy.
What you see
The first impression is of pattern glowing against near-black. Rosettes and serrated leaves repeat evenly across the entire field, rust-red, terracotta, tan and soft blue set against ivory outlines, each palmette interlocking with the next until the ground reads less as scattered sprays than as a single continuous lattice. With no medallion to rest on, the eye simply travels the weave. A wide border in ivory carries its own rust-red floral vine, framed by narrower rust and cream guard stripes, closing the field with real authority.
How it was made
The rug is hand-knotted, wool pile on a cotton warp, at a density of 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre. That is fine enough to hold the serrated edge of each leaf and the round outline of each rosette without blurring, which is what allows a pattern this continuous to read as lattice rather than repeat. The wool itself is hand-spun rather than machine-spun, carrying a slight natural sheen across the motifs, and at 12 mm the pile sits low enough to keep every outline crisp.

A rug this size suits a dining table or a seating group in a living room, and the dark field holds its own against dark furniture rather than disappearing beneath it. Set against a paler floor, it reads as depth rather than heaviness, with the ivory border lifting the edges of the room. The low, dense pile is firm and even underfoot, built for a room in regular use rather than for display. Move around it through the day and the rust-red and soft blue catch the light differently across the vine, the sheen on each motif shifting gently as you pass.
