About This Khorasan
Where it comes from
A Khorasan carpet, 293 x 197 cm (9'7" x 6'6"), from the northeastern Persian province that has produced carpets for two thousand years. The region built its reputation on large, stately medallion compositions with Herati-inspired patterning, deep reds set against navy grounds, and a sense of scale that borders on the monumental. This piece belongs to that weaving tradition but takes a quieter path through it.
What you see
The field is a warm ivory, dense with a floral scroll of palmettes and serrated leaves in sage green, dusty rose, steel blue and brown, the pattern repeating evenly across the whole surface. There is no medallion to anchor the eye, no single point the composition builds toward, and yet the effect is settled rather than restless, the drawing too symmetrical to read as busy. A wide navy floral border closes the field on all sides, edged by a narrow brick red guard stripe, and against the pale ground it holds the whole design together with real authority.
How it was made
The pile is hand-spun wool, knotted by hand onto a cotton foundation at a density of 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre, roughly a quarter of a million knots across every square metre of carpet. Hand-spun yarn takes dye and catches light a little unevenly along its length, which is what gives the motifs their soft, scattered lustre rather than a flat, uniform sheen. At 12 millimetres the pile is left with enough height to carry that texture without blurring the fine serration of the leaves, and a floral repeat this even, across a field this size, is not drawn quickly.
At home
At close to three metres by two, this is a carpet for a dining room or a living room, comfortably under a table or in front of a sofa group. The ivory ground will lift a room that leans dark or plain, while the navy border gives it enough weight to hold its own against solid wood furniture rather than disappearing beneath it. Underfoot the wool is dense and firm, built for a room that gets used rather than admired from the doorway, and as daylight moves across it the scattered lustre in the motifs shifts gently with it, so the pattern never sits entirely still.
