About This Khorasan

Where it comes from

This is a Khorasan rug, also written Khorassan, from the northeastern Iranian province long celebrated for its large-format carpets, rich medallions and Herati-inspired patterns. At 291 x 188 cm (9'7" x 6'2"), it sits at the more modest end of what the region is known to produce, and it takes a quieter route through that same tradition.

What you see

The field is an ivory ground, densely covered in fine floral scrollwork that runs edge to edge without interruption. Terracotta red, slate blue, olive green, mustard and dusty rose scatter through the vine and palmette repeat, and a small central rosette sits almost lost among them rather than commanding the field. A wide, dark navy border, filled with its own floral sprays and flanked by brick-red guard stripes, closes the composition and holds roughly a fifth of the rug's width.

How it was made

The pile is hand-spun wool, knotted onto a cotton warp at 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre. Hand-spun yarn is never perfectly even, and that irregularity gives the surface its soft, matte depth rather than a hard shine. At this density there is enough resolution to carry the dense floral scrollwork in real detail, but not enough spare for a single medallion to dominate — which is why the small central rosette reads as one flower among many, not the focus of the rug.

At home

A piece this size suits a dining table or a seating group in a living room. The ivory field warms a room with pale floors, holding its own against darker wood. Underfoot the wool is dense and firm, built for walking on rather than kept for best. As daylight crosses the room, its light sheen catches the scrollwork in turn, so the pattern never quite settles into one reading.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 291 × 188 cm (5.47 m²) this is a large rug. It sits under a seating group with the front legs of sofa and chairs on it, or under a dining table for four. A table for six wants about 80 cm of clearance all round, and needs more.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre; across 5.47 m² that is roughly 1.1 to 1.4 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
