About This Khorasan

Where it comes from

This is a hand-knotted Khorasan carpet, 358 x 248 cm (11'9" x 8'2"), from the northeastern Iranian province that has woven on this scale for two thousand years. Khorasan work is known for large garden-panel and medallion compositions, and for a palette that usually sets a strong red against deep blue. Here the ground is a warm camel, and the field carries small figural scenes rather than plain florals.

What you see

The overall impression is warm and sandy, camel and ivory carrying navy, crimson and steel blue only as accents. The field breaks into a garden of compartments, each holding a small floral or pictorial vignette. At the centre, a scalloped red medallion seems to enclose a landscape with a single robed figure, while the side panels carry small standing figures among foliage. A wide camel border, dense with scrolling vine and small cartouches, frames the whole without competing with it.

How it was made

Reading at 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre, the weave is fine enough to hold the smallest figures — a standing man, a fold of cloth, a branch — without blurring into the ground. The pile is wool with an admixture of silk, which spins finer than wool and lets the weaver tie a tighter knot, carrying that sharpness into the drawing. At this density across 358 x 248 cm, the piece represents months of work at the loom, and the weaver's signature is knotted into the field.

At home

A rug this size suits a dining room, under a table long enough to keep the border showing, or a living room seating group. The camel ground warms a pale floor and holds its own against dark wood, while navy and crimson keep it from turning flat. Underfoot the pile is dense and firm, clipped for crisp definition, suited to daily use. There is always another small figure still to notice.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 358 × 248 cm (8.88 m²) this is a very large rug. It carries a whole seating group with every furniture leg on it, or a dining table with the chairs pushed back. In a small room it becomes the floor rather than a rug.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 441,000 to 500,000 knots per square metre; across 8.88 m² that is roughly 3.9 to 4.4 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
