About This Khorasan

Where it comes from

This is a Khorasan carpet, also written Khorassan, hand-knotted in the northeast of Iran, 337 x 247 cm (11'1" x 8'1"). Khorasan has produced carpets for two thousand years and is known above all for large medallion compositions built on Herati-inspired scrollwork. This piece keeps the scrollwork and leaves the medallion out entirely.

What you see

The field is a deep midnight blue, close to black, and across it dozens of small vases and cartouches appear in ivory and gold rather than gathering into a single centre. Rust-red, dusty rose and sage-green sprays fill the ground between them, dense and continuous from edge to edge with no obvious starting point. A wide camel-gold border carries a scrolling vine and cartouches of its own, and a narrower dusty-blue guard stripe sits just inside it, holding the pale border firmly against the dark field.

How it was made

The wool pile is spun with silk, which takes a finer twist than wool alone and lets the knot draw a sharper outline — this is what keeps dozens of small vases legible against the dense scrollwork rather than blurring into it. At 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre on a cotton warp, that detail holds at just 12 mm of pile, so the surface stays low, tight and crisp. Placing so many individual motifs across an all-over field, none repeating quite the same way, is slower work than laying out a single symmetrical medallion.

At home

A rug this size suits a living or dining room, under a dining table or in front of a sofa, where it can be taken in whole. The near-black ground holds its own against dark furniture and warms wherever daylight catches the silk in its gold and ivory vases. Underfoot it is dense and firm, made for daily use rather than for best. Walk past it and the pastel vases seem to shift, never settling into quite the same pattern twice.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 337 × 247 cm (8.32 m²) this is a very large rug. It carries a whole seating group with every furniture leg on it, or a dining table with the chairs pushed back. In a small room it becomes the floor rather than a rug.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre; across 8.32 m² that is roughly 1.7 to 2.1 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

This pile contains silk and is more delicate than pure wool. Vacuum without a rotating brush and along the pile, do not beat it, and keep it out of permanent direct sun. Blot spills at once with a light cloth, never rub. For a proper clean a silk-blend rug belongs in expert hands — we handle that for pieces bought from us.
