About This Khorasan
Where it comes from
This is a Khorasan, a classic medallion carpet from the weaving region of northeastern Iran, 245 x 202 cm (8'0" x 6'7"). Khorasan carpets are traditionally woven on a grand scale, with sweeping medallions and Herati-inspired floral patterns filling wide, open fields. Here the format is more modest than the region's usual ambition, but the density of the drawing is not.
What you see
A deep brick red fills the field, covered so thickly with scrolling floral vines that little open ground remains. At the centre sits a navy blue medallion with pendants above and below, answered by matching navy spandrels in the four corners. Muted pink, dusty blue, tan and olive move through the vine work, softening what would otherwise be a hard contrast between red and navy. A wide ivory border, carrying the same floral scrollwork, frames the field and is closed by a slim navy guard stripe. Close to the lower left corner, one small motif appears to sit apart from its mirrored counterpart, a quiet break in an otherwise symmetrical design.
How it was made
Every knot here was tied by hand, hand-spun wool pile on a cotton foundation, at a density of around 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre. That is enough to draw fine scrolling vines and small floral detail with real crispness, closer to the precision of a city workshop carpet than to the more spacious patterns Khorasan weaving is generally known for. The pile stands at 12 millimetres, giving an even, soft, velvety surface with a light natural sheen, and enough depth for the floral drawing to sit slightly proud of the field rather than lying flat within it.
At home
At 245 by 202 centimetres, this rug suits a dining table with room to spare on each side, or a seating group in a living room. The red brings real warmth into a room with pale flooring, and the navy medallion and border give it enough weight to hold its own against dark furniture. Underfoot the wool is dense and springy, firm enough for a room in daily use. As daylight crosses it through the day, the muted pinks, blues and olive greens lift briefly out of the red before settling back into the vine work.
