About This Khorasan
Where it comes from
This is a Khorasan rug, 271 x 221 cm (8'11" x 7'3"), from the northeastern weaving region of Iran once described as the land of the rising sun. Khorasan is known for large, confident medallion compositions and Herati-inspired floral patterns, usually carried on a strong balance of red and blue. This piece has a medallion too, but it barely announces itself.
What you see
An ivory field is covered edge to edge in a fine, dense scroll of red, rose and slate-blue flowers, each stem and leaf set close against the next. Stay with it a moment and a faint lozenge shape gathers at the centre, built from the same flowers rather than drawn over them, so it never quite interrupts the field. Around this sits a wide navy border filled with red palmettes and scrolling vine, held in by a narrow, solid brick-red guard stripe, and it is this dark, decisive frame, not the field, that the eye meets first.
How it was made
Drawing this fine takes a knot count to match, and here it runs between 201,000 and 250,000 knots per square metre, hand-tied over a cotton warp. That density is what lets a weaver set a flower stem and its shadow into the same square centimetre, and it is also why the medallion can sit inside the field instead of needing an outline to be read. The pile is hand-spun wool, clipped to 12mm, close enough to hold every curve of the scrollwork crisp, and it carries the light sheen that hand-spun wool takes on once it is washed and finished.
At home
A rug of this size sits well under a seating group in a living room, or at the head of a smaller dining table, and the ivory field will lift a pale floor rather than compete with it. Against darker furniture the navy border does the opposite work, holding its own and giving the room an edge to build around. Underfoot the pile is dense and firm, wool spun by hand rather than machine, and made for a room that is actually used rather than kept for best. In low light the sheen catches along the scrollwork first, so the field seems to shift very slightly before the eye finds the medallion again.
