About This Khorasan
Where it comes from
This is a Khorasan rug, 250 x 179 cm (8'2" x 5'10"), from the northeastern Iranian region of the same name, also written Khorassan, a weaving centre with two thousand years of production behind it. Khorasan is best known for large, medallion-centred compositions balancing deep reds against blues. Here the drawing takes a different route: there is no medallion at all, only an open, continuous field of pattern.
What you see
The first impression is of an ivory ground worked over, edge to edge, with a dense scroll of palmettes, serrated leaves and rosettes, each motif answered by another in careful symmetry. Nothing at the centre gathers the eye; the pattern simply continues, panel after panel, as though the field itself were the subject rather than a setting for one. A wide brick-red border closes the composition, its own floral scrollwork framed in turn by narrow navy guard stripes, and against the pale field that red reads as a firm, unmistakable edge.
How it was made
The pile is hand-knotted, hand-spun wool on a cotton warp, at a density of 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre - enough to carry the fine serration of each leaf and the small rosettes between them without the drawing blurring into a general floral wash. Hand-spun yarn takes dye and light slightly unevenly from thread to thread, which is why the denser motifs carry a faint sheen that the open field does not. At 12 millimetres the pile has real depth underfoot, without ever softening the precision of the drawing above it.
At home
A rug this size sits well under a dining table or in front of a living-room sofa, and it works particularly hard where the floor or furniture is kept plain, since the ivory ground lifts the room while the brick-red border keeps the eye anchored. Underfoot it is dense and firm, a wool made for daily use rather than careful stepping-around. Move a lamp across it in the evening and the scrollwork catches light exactly where the wool sits densest, so the pattern seems to breathe rather than simply repeat.
