About This Khorasan

Where it comes from

This is a Khorasan, also written Khorassan, a rug type from the weaving region of northeastern Iran that has produced carpets for two thousand years, known above all for large-format medallion compositions in red balanced against blue. This piece measures 288 x 201 cm (9'5" x 6'7"). It carries that tradition's colour and density, though it sets the medallion aside.

What you see

A deep brick red fills the field, worked over edge to edge in fine ivory and pale blue floral scrolling that never breaks its rhythm. At the exact centre sits a small rosette, no larger than the blossoms around it, so the eye finds no single point to settle on and follows the vine instead. Dusty pink, sage green and camel show quietly within the scrollwork. A wide navy border of large floral palmettes, framed by narrow cream guards, closes the field on all sides.

How it was made

An all-over field is harder to keep even than a medallion rug, where the eye settles on a centre and forgives some drift elsewhere. Here density and rhythm had to hold steady from edge to edge. At 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre, hand-knotted onto a cotton warp, the weaver held that fineness across the whole field, not just at a centrepiece. The pile is handspun wool, which takes dye unevenly and gives the surface its light sheen; a 12 mm pile height keeps the drawing crisp.

At home

At 288 x 201 cm, this suits a dining table or a living room seating group. The brick red warms a pale floor and holds its own against dark wood, while the navy border keeps its edge clear. Underfoot the wool is dense and firm, made for daily use. With no medallion at the centre, the scrollwork reads evenly wherever you stand, and keeps catching the light throughout the day.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 288 × 201 cm (5.79 m²) this is a large rug. It sits under a seating group with the front legs of sofa and chairs on it, or under a dining table for four. A table for six wants about 80 cm of clearance all round, and needs more.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre; across 5.79 m² that is roughly 1.2 to 1.4 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
