About This Khorasan

Where it comes from

This is a Khorasan rug, also known as Meshed, 288 x 198 cm (9'5" x 6'6"), from the weaving region of northeast Iran that has produced carpets for two millennia. Khorasan work is usually recognised by its scale and its bold medallions set against strong red and blue. This piece takes a quieter path, an all-over floral field rather than one commanding motif.

What you see

An ivory field carries the eye first, warm rather than stark, crossed by a dense scrolling vine in rust red, dusty blue, terracotta and camel, with touches of green in the small floral sprays. Palmettes scatter through the vine at no fixed interval, and at the exact centre a small rosette sits quietly, just enough to anchor the design without commanding it. A wide navy border encloses the field, filled with the same reddish scrollwork, framed by a narrow light-blue guard stripe on either side.

How it was made

This is hand-knotted on a cotton warp, the pile in hand-spun wool, at a density of 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre. That density is what lets the vine run continuously and finely across the whole field rather than gather into one bold motif. Hand-spun wool is never perfectly even, and that gives the surface its soft, matte character rather than a glassy sheen, while a pile of 12 millimetres keeps the fine drawing crisp underfoot.

At home

At this size, the rug suits a dining table or a living room seating group. The ivory field lifts a room short on daylight, while the navy border holds against dark furniture nearby. Underfoot the wool is dense and firm, a weave for daily use. As light moves across it, the red and blue in the vine shift gently against the ivory, keeping the quiet field alive.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 288 × 198 cm (5.70 m²) this is a large rug. It sits under a seating group with the front legs of sofa and chairs on it, or under a dining table for four. A table for six wants about 80 cm of clearance all round, and needs more.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 321,000 to 380,000 knots per square metre; across 5.70 m² that is roughly 1.8 to 2.2 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
