Kilims are flatwoven textiles, woven rather than knotted, produced across Iran, Turkey, and the Caucasus. Unlike pile rugs, kilims have no knots: the weft threads are passed directly over and under the warp to create the pattern. The result is a thin, light, reversible textile with bold, strictly geometric designs that read clearly from both sides.
Patterns and colours identify not just the country but the specific tribe of origin. The flat surface makes kilims lightweight and versatile, historically used by nomads as floor coverings, saddle blankets, wall hangings, and tent dividers. Natural dyes produce enduringly rich colours.
More on Kilims: origin, making and how to recognise a genuine piece
Measuring 272 × 198 cm, with an area of 5.39 m², crafted from Hand-spun Wool, Hand-woven, this piece is a testament to masterful craftsmanship. The knot density of nicht messbar speaks to the extraordinary care woven into every inch.
Preserved in perfect condition, one of the oldest textile forms in the near east, versatile for floors, walls, and layering in modern interiors.
Traditional craftsmanship
At 272 × 198 cm (5.39 m²) this is a large rug. It sits under a seating group with the front legs of sofa and chairs on it, or under a dining table for four. A table for six wants about 80 cm of clearance all round, and needs more.
No — this piece is hand-woven, not knotted. A flatweave has no pile: the pattern comes from warp and weft alone. That makes it thin, light and usable on both sides, and it is a technique in its own right rather than a simpler version of a knotted rug.
Vacuum regularly, ideally along the weave and without a rotating brush. A flatweave can be turned over, which spreads the wear — flip it once or twice a year. Blot spills at once with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards, and never rub.
