About This Kelim
Where it comes from
This is a Kelim Pars, a hand-woven tribal flatweave from Fars province in southern Iran, the homeland of the Qashqai and related nomadic weaving groups. It measures 218 x 194 cm (7'2" x 6'4"). Where this type is usually loud, built from bold rautenfelder, stylised animals and clan signs in deep red and indigo, this piece works instead in a single, quiet register of brown.
What you see
The ground is a warm caramel, and across it run vertical stripes that shift between lighter oatmeal, darker chestnut and, here and there, a fine thread of grey-taupe. There is no medallion and no border; the striped field simply runs to the edge, closed off by nothing more than the woven selvedge. Up close the surface is flat and finely ribbed, almost wood-grain in its rhythm, with no pattern in the usual sense, only tone against tone.
How it was made
A Kelim Pars is woven, not knotted, on a horizontal ground loom, and a nomadic loom is only ever as wide as its weaver can reach. This one was made in three separate loom-width panels and then joined, and the horizontal seams between them are still visible if you look for them. That constraint is also what gives the piece its stripes: a cotton warp and a weft of hand-spun wool, packed close enough to hide the warp entirely, producing a weft-faced weave with a fine vertical ribbing and a matt, close surface rather than any pile.
At home
At 4 mm this is a flat, light rug, and it earns its keep in a hallway, a landing, or under a desk in a study, anywhere a patterned tribal piece would compete rather than settle. The caramel and chestnut warm a pale floor and read equally well against dark furniture, since there is no motif to clash with either. Underfoot it is thin, firm and close to the ground, and being reversible and hard-wearing it takes daily footsteps without complaint. Sunlight crossing it in the afternoon catches the ribbing at an angle, and the stripes seem to shift a shade with it.

How do I care for this rug?
Vacuum regularly, ideally along the weave and without a rotating brush. A flatweave can be turned over, which spreads the wear — flip it once or twice a year. Blot spills at once with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards, and never rub.
