About This Kelim
Where it comes from
A Kelim Pars, a tribal flatweave from Fars province in southern Iran, measuring 276 x 195 cm (9'1" x 6'5"). This is the weaving ground of the Qashqai and Khamseh confederations, tribes usually associated with bold diamond fields, stylised animals and clan signs in deep red and indigo. This particular piece sets that vocabulary aside almost entirely.
What you see
The first impression is a plain, warm camel-beige, closer to sand than to the deep reds this tribe usually favours. Fine vertical striations run through the field, the trace of hand-spun yarn rather than applied pattern. Three horizontal panels appear, joined at seams where separate widths of the loom were brought together. One lighter ivory-beige rectangle interrupts the striping in the middle panel, the only irregularity in an otherwise even field. There is no medallion, no contrasting border; the field runs to a narrow dark selvage.
How it was made
This kilim was woven, not knotted, on a horizontal ground loom moved with the camp. The warp is cotton, the weft hand-spun wool, and the unevenness of hand-spinning gives the field its fine vertical striations. Such looms produce a width narrower than the finished rug, so two or three widths were woven separately and joined, leaving the seams visible as the panel lines. At four millimetres the weave is flat and thin, with no pile to wear down, and either face can be used.
At home
A piece this plain and flat suits a hallway or a study, somewhere to be walked on rather than admired. The camel-beige warms a pale floor and sits quietly against dark furniture. Underfoot it is thin, firm and flat, built for traffic rather than protection, and reversible enough to be turned when one side has had its use. In changing light the striations soften or sharpen, so the surface never looks quite the same twice.

No — this piece is hand-woven, not knotted. A flatweave has no pile: the pattern comes from warp and weft alone. That makes it thin, light and usable on both sides, and it is a technique in its own right rather than a simpler version of a knotted rug.
How do I care for this rug?
Vacuum regularly, ideally along the weave and without a rotating brush. A flatweave can be turned over, which spreads the wear — flip it once or twice a year. Blot spills at once with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards, and never rub.
