About This Lori-Pars

Where it comes from

This is a Lori rug, woven by the Lori-Pars weavers of Iran's Zagros mountains, measuring 242 x 194 cm (7'11" x 6'4"). Lori work, also written Luri, is nomadic, knotted from memory rather than from a drawn plan, and known for bold, simplified geometry set down in confident, grounded colour. This piece carries that character into something close to architectural.

What you see

The ground is a warm camel, softly heathered, and across it runs a grid of rectangular panels in darker chocolate-brown lines. Some cells are outlined again in a lighter beige, a quieter second layer within the first. There is no medallion and no floral motif, only the grid itself, plain against the wool. A narrow beige border frames the field, close enough in tone that it holds the design rather than announcing it.

How it was made

The warp and pile were both hand-spun, and hand-spinning is never perfectly even, which gives the surface its faint horizontal striation and soft, ribbed feel underfoot. At 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre and an 11mm pile, this is a rug made for daily use rather than outright fineness. Look closely and the grid lines are not quite ruled; a weaver working from memory rather than a paper plan draws each line a little differently, which is what keeps the pattern looking drawn rather than printed.

At home

A rug this size suits a bedroom floor or a quiet seating corner in a living room, somewhere it can be taken in whole. The camel ground warms a pale floor and holds its own against dark wood, the low contrast keeping the room calm. Underfoot it is dense and flat, made to be walked on rather than kept for best. Morning light catches the ribbing in the wool, and the grid seems to shift very slightly, line by line, the way hand work always does.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 242 × 194 cm (4.69 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre; across 4.69 m² that is roughly 0.9 to 1.2 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
