About This Lori-Pars
Where it comes from
This is a Lori rug, a nomadic weaving from the Zagros mountains of western Iran, sometimes written Luri, measuring 282 x 202 cm (9'3" x 6'8"). Lori weavers knot from memory rather than from a drawn plan, and their rugs are usually known for bold, confident motifs in strong, earthy colour. This piece takes the same nomadic hand somewhere quieter.
What you see
The field is a warm cream with a sandy undertone, crossed by a crisp grid of soft taupe-brown lines. The grid divides the field into an even array of plain cream squares, with no medallion and no floral motif to interrupt it. A narrow border in a slightly deeper cream frames the field, barely contrasting with it. Seen from across a room, the whole rug reads as a calm, minimal chequerboard rather than a traditional Persian pattern.
How it was made
The pile is hand-spun wool, hand-knotted onto a wool foundation, and hand-spinning never produces a perfectly even thread. That is why each square carries its own tonal streaking, lighter in places, darker in others, rather than sitting flat like a printed grid. The knotting runs at 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre, a density suited to bold, simplified geometry of this kind rather than fine detailed drawing, and the 11 mm pile gives the surface a soft, slightly rounded feel underfoot rather than a flat one.
At home
At close to three metres by two, this rug suits a living or dining room, sitting comfortably under a table or in front of a sofa. Against a pale floor the cream warms the room without adding visual noise; against darker furniture it holds its own quietly. The pile is soft and forgiving underfoot, matte rather than lustrous, and made for daily use rather than careful protection. As light moves across the room through the day, the streaking within each square catches differently, so the grid never looks quite as flat as it does in a photograph.
