About This Lori-Pars

Where it comes from

This is a Lori-Pars, also written Luri, a nomadic weaving from the Zagros mountains of southern Iran, 227 x 173 cm (7'5" x 5'8"). Lori rugs are usually known for bold, simplified motifs knotted from memory — confident geometric shapes rather than symmetry drawn to a plan. This piece breaks with that expectation: there is no motif here at all, only colour.

What you see

The field is a warm cinnamon brown, but it never settles into one flat tone. Instead the colour runs in bands from pale sand through deeper rust to a darker red-brown, striping the whole field top to bottom. There is no medallion and no drawn pattern to rest the eye on — the striations themselves carry the design. A narrow double line in golden tan frames the field, barely lifting off it, so the border reads as an edge rather than a decoration.

How it was made

The effect comes from the wool itself. Lori weavers spin their own yarn and dye it in small batches with mountain plants, so no two skeins match exactly. Hand-knotted row by row on a portable loom, those shifts in dye lot become the vertical bands running the length of this rug — what weavers call abrash. At 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre on a wool warp, the weave holds the soft 11 mm pile firmly, keeping the bands crisp rather than blurred.

At home

This rug suits a bedroom floor or a small seating group in a living room. The cinnamon tones warm a pale wooden floor and hold their own against dark furniture. Underfoot the handspun pile is thick and soft, better suited to a quiet room than a busy hallway. As daylight crosses it, the striations shift, and the rug never quite looks the same twice.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 227 × 173 cm (3.93 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre; across 3.93 m² that is roughly 790,000 to 980,000 individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
