About This Loribaft
Where it comes from
This is a Loribaft, a Lori-style weaving, also written Luri, made in India, 247 x 173 cm (8'1" x 5'8"). The Lori and Gabbeh tradition traces back to nomadic life in Iran's Zagros mountains, and pieces in that style are usually known for bold, simplified motifs and a graphic calm rather than dense ornament. This piece takes that calm further still, settling into an almost solid field.
What you see
A deep chocolate brown, warmed by a reddish undertone, fills nearly the whole field. Look closely and it is not quite plain: faint vertical striping runs through the brown, and thin vertical rows of tiny mustard-gold arrow and leaf shapes scatter irregularly across it, joined here and there by small dots of ochre and cream. There is no medallion, no centre to find; the pattern spreads evenly across the field instead. A narrow stripe of lighter camel-brown runs around the edge, barely lifting off the field it encloses.
How it was made
This is a hand-knotted piece, made in India in the Lori style, with a cotton warp and a pile of natural, hand-spun wool. Hand-spinning never produces a perfectly even thread, and that slight unevenness is what gives the field its faint vertical striping, a texture no machine-spun yarn would show. The knot count sits at 201,000 to 250,000 per square metre, dense enough to carry a full ten millimetres of pile without pinning the scattered motifs into a rigid, mechanical grid.

The chocolate brown grounds a pale floor and holds its own against dark furniture equally well, while the mustard flecks keep the surface from ever feeling flat. Underfoot the wool is soft and deep, more suited to a quiet living room or bedroom than to a hallway of constant traffic. In low light the vertical striations catch and shift, so the surface never looks quite as plain as it first seems.
