About This Lori-Pars

Where it comes from

This is a Lori-Pars, also written Luri-Pars, a tribal weaving from the Zagros mountains of south-western Iran, 281 x 204 cm (9'3" x 6'8"). Rugs of this kind are known for bold, simplified motifs knotted from memory rather than a plan, and for a thick, hand-spun wool pile. Here that same tradition has been turned toward something far quieter: a grid.

What you see

The first impression is a warm cream field, held in check by a fine rust-brown line grid that divides it into a steady sequence of squares. There is no medallion, no motif at the centre; the grid itself carries the design. Inside each square lies a faint dotted lattice in terracotta, barely rising off the cream ground. Rather than a separate border stripe, the grid runs straight to the narrow, plain woven edge, so the pattern feels continuous rather than framed.

How it was made

The pile is hand-spun wool, hand-knotted rather than woven flat. Hand-spun yarn varies slightly in thickness along its length, and that is what gives the surface its faintly grained texture and matte finish, with no sheen. Knotted at around 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre, the grid was drawn freehand, from memory, with no cartoon to follow — likely why the dotted lattice inside each square varies rather than repeating exactly, a small human presence inside an otherwise disciplined structure.

At home

In a living room this rug sits well under a seating group, the cream ground warming a pale wood floor and holding its own against darker furniture. The dense, hand-spun wool feels firm underfoot, made for daily use rather than display. As daylight crosses the room, the rust-brown grid catches at a slightly different angle in every square, so the pattern never quite sits still.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 281 × 204 cm (5.73 m²) this is a large rug. It sits under a seating group with the front legs of sofa and chairs on it, or under a dining table for four. A table for six wants about 80 cm of clearance all round, and needs more.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre; across 5.73 m² that is roughly 1.2 to 1.4 million individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
