About This Loribaft

Where it comes from

This is a Loribaft, also known as Lori, a nomadic weaving from the Zagros mountains of Iran, sized 201 x 159 cm (6'7" x 5'3"). The type is known for bold, simplified motifs knotted from memory rather than drawn to a plan. Here that boldness goes a step further: the motifs have been left out altogether, and only colour remains.

What you see

The field runs in wide bands of warm orange and apricot, unbroken by any figure. A thin maroon pinstripe marks where the orange gives way to a solid black band at each end, each occupying roughly a sixth of the rug's length. Between the bands the colour does not meet in a hard line; it blends, one tone easing into the next. Within each stripe the hand-spun wool shows soft tonal streaking, and at the edges the pile stands deep enough to catch a shadow.

How it was made

That gradient comes straight from the way the wool was worked. Hand-spun rather than machine-spun, the yarn varies slightly in thickness along its length and takes dye a little unevenly, so the colour shifts gradually from knot to knot instead of stopping at a drawn line. At a density of 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre, the weave holds the 12 mm pile upright and firm, giving the black bands their crisp edge while the orange field is left free to blur.

At home

In a living room this rug suits a sofa or seating area, its size enough to anchor the space. Against a pale floor the orange and apricot bring warmth in; against darker furniture the black bands hold their own. Underfoot the hand-spun wool is thick, soft, and firm enough for daily use. As daylight crosses the room, the gradient between the stripes shifts with it, so the colours never sit quite still.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 201 × 159 cm (3.20 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre; across 3.20 m² that is roughly 640,000 to 800,000 individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
