About This Lori-Pars
Where it comes from
A Lori rug from the Zagros mountains of Iran, 208 x 156 cm (6'10" x 5'1"). Woven by the same nomadic hand as the better-known Gabbeh, Lori pieces are knotted from memory on a portable loom rather than from any drawn plan, and the type is usually loved for bold, simplified motifs in confident colour. This one carries no motif at all.
What you see
The field runs in six horizontal panels, each a distinctly different shade of chestnut and tan brown, one giving way to the next almost like grain running through wood. Thin lines of soft gold divide each band from its neighbour. A narrow beige border edges the whole piece, only a little lighter than the field, so it holds the composition together rather than framing it loudly. Look closer and each panel carries fine vertical streaks across its surface, the trace of a hand-spun yarn rather than a flat, uniform tone.
How it was made
The wool here was spun by hand, so its thickness varies slightly along its length, and the natural dye taken from mountain plants and minerals settles a little differently from one length of yarn to the next. That is what produced the panels: each band was knotted from its own batch of spun and dyed wool, and the shift in tone between them is simply what happens when a material is worked by hand rather than to a fixed formula. At 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre this is substantial tribal work, and an 11mm pile gives the surface a real, soft depth rather than a thin covering.
At home
A rug this size and this quiet belongs in a bedroom, laid where bare feet meet it first thing, or under a small seating group in a calmer living room. Against pale floorboards the chestnut and tan tones bring warmth without pulling the eye toward any one point, and against darker furniture the panels simply hold their own, tonal rather than busy. Underfoot it is soft and deep, forgiving on a room used daily rather than one kept for show. As the light in the room moves through the day, the vertical striations within each band catch it differently panel by panel, so the same rug reads slightly differently in the morning than it does by lamplight in the evening.
