About This Lori-Pars
Where it comes from
This is a Lori-Pars, a nomadic weaving from the Zagros mountains of southern Iran, sized generously at 293 x 195 cm (9'7" x 6'5"). Rugs of this family, and its close relative the Gabbeh, are known across the trade for bold, simplified motifs knotted in thick, glossy hand-spun wool. This particular piece carries none of that boldness. It carries no motif at all.
What you see
The field is a warm sandbeige with a faint gold cast, plain but for fine vertical striations running through it like the grain in timber. Look closer and darker beige and light brown streaks surface within that graining, never settling into a pattern, never forming a border. The edge is a narrow flat selvage in the same sandy tone, so the whole rug reads as one unbroken plane of colour, closer to raw material than to a drawn design.
How it was made
The striation is not decoration; it is the visible record of hand-spinning. Wool spun by hand varies slightly in thickness and in how it takes up dye along its length, and that variation carries straight through into the knotted pile as a woodgrain-like graining rather than a flat, even tone. At 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre and an 11 mm pile, the weave is fine enough to hold that graining crisply while the wool itself stays thick and soft. Nothing here was drawn from a cartoon; the plainness was the weaver's own decision, made slightly differently in every row, from memory rather than from a plan.

A rug this quiet suits a room that already has enough going on: a living room with a strong sofa, or a bedroom with dark furniture, where 293 x 195 cm sits comfortably as the floor beneath a seating group or beside the bed. The sand and gold tones warm a pale floor without adding another pattern for it to compete with, and lift a room that gets grey daylight.
