About This Lori-Pars

Where it comes from

This is a Lori-Pars rug, hand-knotted in the Zagros mountains of southern Iran, 193 x 152 cm (6'4" x 5'0"). Lori weavers, also written Luri, are known for bold, simplified motifs and confident natural colour rather than fine repeat pattern. Here that tradition takes an unexpected turn: instead of the animal or garden motifs the style is loved for, this piece reads as a quiet study in colour and form.

What you see

A warm sandy beige ground carries fine golden striping along its length, reading as texture as much as pattern. Across the centre, a soft grey-brown rectangle overlaps a rust-toned cross, the two shapes set against each other rather than locked into a symmetrical medallion. The wide border matches the field tone almost exactly, held apart only by a thin, darker guard line. The composition sits closer to a study in blocks of colour than to a rug pattern in the familiar sense.

How it was made

Lori weavers knot from memory, without a drawn cartoon, which is why these shapes sit freehand rather than mirrored or repeated. The wool is hand-spun rather than machine-spun, giving it an uneven thickness that shows as vertical striping across the field and a slightly nubby surface to the touch. At 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre and an 11mm pile, the knotting holds the block shapes crisply while keeping the wool's soft, matte character.

At home

At 193 x 152 cm, this rug suits a seating area in a living room, in front of a sofa or beneath a low table. The sand and gold ground warms a pale floor, and the rust cross holds its own against darker wood furniture. Underfoot it is thick and soft, its slightly uneven pile suited to a calm room rather than heavy traffic. As daylight crosses it, the striping catches unevenly and the grey and rust blocks shift subtly through the day.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 193 × 152 cm (2.93 m²) this is a medium rug. It works in front of a sofa, in front of a bed or in a study. It is too small for a dining table — there you want about 80 cm of clearance so a chair does not tip over the edge when pushed back.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 201,000 to 250,000 knots per square metre; across 2.93 m² that is roughly 590,000 to 730,000 individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
