About This Belutsch

Where it comes from

This is a Baluch, also written Belouch, a tribal weaving from the borderlands of southeastern Iran, 181 x 90 cm (5'11" x 2'11"). The type is known for deep, earthy colour and bold angular geometry, often built around a prayer-niche form. Here the field takes a different path: rather than a mihrab or a medallion, it is given over to a single running lattice.

What you see

A deep brick-red to chestnut ground carries a dense diamond lattice, a small rosette at every crossing point, repeated edge to edge with no medallion to break it. The effect is closer to a woven textile than a picture - even, continuous, without a single focal point to rest on. A wide, almost black border closes around it, filled with terracotta hooked diamonds, then several narrow guard stripes in cream and red before the cream fringe begins.

How it was made

The wool is hand-spun and knotted onto a cotton warp at a density of 128,000 to 160,000 knots per square metre - a tight count for work done from memory on a portable loom, letting the lattice run cleanly end to end. Baluch weaving is valued for irregularity of hand, yet here the rhythm stays unusually steady. A pile of just six millimetres keeps the surface close and matte, the wool's own texture doing the work rather than any sheen.

At home

This rug suits a hallway, a landing, or the floor beside a bed, somewhere it is seen daily rather than sat on. The chestnut and brick red hold their warmth without direct light, and the near-black border gives a firm edge against a pale floor. Underfoot it is dense and short-piled, made to be walked on rather than kept for best, the lattice drawing the eye back one rosette at a time.

Questions about this rug

Which room is this rug for?

At 181 × 90 cm (1.63 m²) this is a small rug. It works beside a bed, in a reading corner, in front of a fireplace or as a mat by a door. It does not furnish a room; it makes a point in one.

Is this rug hand-knotted?

Yes, knotted by hand — knot by knot on a loom, not machine-made. The density is 128,000 to 160,000 knots per square metre; across 1.63 m² that is roughly 210,000 to 260,000 individual knots, every one of them tied by hand.

How do I care for this rug?

Hand-spun wool still carries its own lanolin, which keeps liquid sitting on the surface for a moment: blot quickly, with clear water and a light cloth, working inwards and without rubbing. Otherwise regular vacuuming along the pile is enough. Turn the rug once or twice a year so light and footfall reach it evenly.
