About This Belutsch
Where it comes from
This is a Baluch runner, also written Belouch, a tribal weaving from the border country of southeastern Iran, measuring 241 x 118 cm (7'11" x 3'10"). Baluch weavers are known for bold, angular geometry and a rich, earthy palette in which deep red and indigo usually dominate. Here the ground itself is unusual: instead of the customary deep red, it sits almost black, brown-black rather than true black.
What you see
A near-black field, brown rather than true black, is the first thing you notice. Down its length runs a column of stacked geometric medallions, each one totem-like, drawn in brick red, rust and mustard-orange with touches of cream and muted teal-grey. Around them a wide red border, taking up roughly a fifth of the width on each side, carries cream and orange cross and star motifs. Against the dark ground the whole border reads as a bright, contained frame.
How it was made
Baluch weavers work from memory rather than a drawn plan, which is why the medallions repeat with small variations rather than mechanical precision. The wool here is hand-spun, so the yarn varies slightly in thickness along its length; that is what gives the pile its faint ribbing and slightly uneven surface. At 161,000 to 200,000 knots per square metre and a pile of 6 mm, the weave is dense enough to hold that crisp geometry firmly, rather than letting it soften into a blur.
At home
A runner of this size suits a hallway or landing, seen in passing rather than sat upon. The near-black field hides marks and lifts a corridor with little daylight, while the red and mustard medallions still read from a distance. Underfoot the wool is dense and firm, built for daily use. In evening light the rust and cream catch first, then the eye follows the totems down the centre.
